NETS-S in my Classroom

After viewing the NETS-S at International Society for Technology in Education website, I see a direct correlation between the NETS-T (National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers) and the NETS-S (National Educational Technology Standards for Students). Just like teaching any subject or concept, teachers need to first understand the concept in its entirety in order to properly teach it in the classroom. The standards in the NETS-T basically align witht he numbered standards of the NETS-S.

As a second grade teacher, goal setting is a very important skill to develop, but also very difficult for second graders because they don't truly know what they are goal setting for. Although at this age, some of the standards may seem near impossible for such a young child to accomplish, Communication and Collaboration and Digital Citizenship are two standards they could really strive for using a GAME plan. First we would work as a class and discuss each standard and ways we could accomplish them, thus setting our Goal and moving into our Action plan. As they are carrying out their Action plan, careful Monitoring by both students and teacher need to occur to ensure proper monitoring. Finally, they may evaluate their GAME plan and change if needed. I feel that starting students setting goals at this age will be extremely beneficial in the future.

  1. Brooke,
I agree with you that setting goals is a hard skill for young students. Having to monitor their own progress and decide if they need to modify their plan can be especially tricky. If this is something that is introduced to them at a young age it will definitely be beneficial to them in the future.

  2. Brooke,

I also chose to focus on digital citizenship. I think the earlier they get started with this concept, the better they will do as they get older.

I can't imagine getting 2nd graders to set a goal; I have a hard enough time with my 4th graders! Kudos to you for making it work!

  3. Brooke,

I do not understand students of that age. However, anything that elementary teachers can do that develops habits of a good learner are amazingly helpful as students progress through the grades. Even if it is a goal for students to tie their own shoe. The action is to practice tying their shoe 5 times per day. They will monitor their plan by keeping track in an organizer. The can evaluate their progress by seeing if they can tie their shoe.

I hope I don't sound too much like a dumb high school teacher. It is quite a challenge to set the expectations for your students for a career of learning.

  4. Brooke,
I think you can accomplish your GAME plan goal with your second graders, because you have demonstrated your competence with all the awesome activities you have tried this year. Your students must have loved your Safari Live Montage this past year, and integrating many other aspects of technology. I feel as teachers if we set our goals for the students high, then they will also learn to set their own personal goals just as high. Good luck to you next school year.

  5. Brooke,
I have been struggling with imagining my students setting some of these goals and using a GAME plan but I think you are right in that kids are like sponges, I think. They pick up information quickly and if they at least have an introduction to some of this, they will do so well in their future classes.

  6. Thanks for all the comments! I really am impressed with how much my second graders can achieve when you set your expectations high and have them set goals to achieve them!
